American Water Data Breach?:
Lawsuit Investigation
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed in light of the American Water cybersecurity incident.
As part of their investigation, they need to hear from customers of the public utility company.
On October 3, 2024, American Water noticed unusual activity on its network, later determined to be a cybersecurity incident, according to a filing submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The public utility giant deactivated certain systems to protect the potential exposure of customer data, but has since resumed billing processes and reestablished access to its online portal. The scope of the cybersecurity attack, including whether customer data was put at risk, is still under investigation, with American Water stating that it will "provide more information when and as appropriate."
TechCrunch reports that American Water supplies drinking water and wastewater services to more than 14 million people across the country.
If you are a customer of American Water, attorneys want to hear from you. You may be able to start a class action lawsuit to recover compensation for loss of privacy, time spent dealing with the breach, out-of-pocket costs, and more.
A successful case could also force American Water to ensure it takes proper steps to protect the information it was entrusted with.
