Alabama Ophthalmology Associates Security Incident: What Happened?
Alabama Ophthalmology Associates (AOA) is sending notice of a data breach that involved unauthorized access to sensitive information belonging to current and former patients. The breach occurred from January 22 to January 30, 2025. After detecting unusual network activity on January 30, Alabama Ophthalmology Associates secured its network and engaged a digital forensics firm to investigate.
The investigation into the Alabama Ophthalmology Associates data breach revealed that personal and protected health information, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance details, treatment information, medical record numbers, and medical history information, may have been accessed. Not all data elements were affected for every individual.
According to a data breach notice on AOA's website, the practice concluded its review of the affected files on March 19, 2025 and began sending notice to impacted patients with available address information on April 7, 2025.
Alabama Ophthalmology Associates has offices in Birmingham, Huntsville and Montgomery, Alabama.
