I Heard About the Patreon Settlement on Reddit. What’s Going On?
The Patreon class action lawsuit —Stark et al. v. Patreon, Inc.—claimed the company breached consumers’ protected privacy rights by integrating onto the platform a piece of programming code known as the Meta pixel, which secretly tracked and disclosed users’ personal data to Facebook.
According to the Patreon lawsuit, the company collected subscribers’ Facebook IDs—unique identifiers linked to individual social media accounts—and the titles of any videos they watched on Patreon.com. The harvested information was then transmitted to Facebook, where it could be used for targeted advertising purposes, the case alleged.
The filing charged that Patreon’s conduct plainly contravened the VPPA, which prohibits a “video tape service provider” from disclosing a consumer’s personally identifiable information to third parties without first obtaining consent. The case has now been resolved with the settlement detailed on this page.
