Tennessee Valley Family Services, Inc. is staring down a lawsuit filed by two former employees who allege they’re owed unpaid wages.
According to the suit, the plaintiffs worked as youth advisors at the defendant’s safe house in Alabama for “homeless, abused and at-risk victims of trafficking.” The lawsuit alleges that in October 2016, the defendant began paying the plaintiffs a salary based on a 40-hour workweek despite requiring employees to put in over 60 hours each week. The employees claim they regularly worked 15-hour shifts, during which they were responsible for supervising house residents overnight, without pay. From the complaint:
“During ‘sleep time’ Plaintiffs were not allowed to leave the premises. They were permitted to lie down and try to get some sleep. However, they were also required to get up many times during the night to deal with the residents, such as doing bed checks and teens coming in at different times based on curfews up to 1:00 am. Plaintiffs were required to rise and start the day at 5:00 am. Most nights Plaintiffs received little to no sleep.”
