Three former employees of Douglas, Georgia’s Comfortel Suites have filed suit against the hotel’s operating company and two individual owners over claims that they are owed unpaid wages and were unlawfully terminated.
The plaintiffs say they worked for the defendants in exchange for $37.50 to $50.00 per week plus residency at the hotel. The suit argues, however, that the defendants “failed to meet a number of requirements necessary to qualify for credit towards wages,” including charging the plaintiffs more than the “reasonable cost” of lodging. The suit claims the defendants credited the same amount to employees who shared a room as employees who lived in separate rooms.
Furthermore, the plaintiffs allege that the defendants required them to work more than 40 hours per week without paying them time-and-a-half premium wages for the hours over 40. According to the complaint, employees were threatened with eviction if they refused to work overtime. In fact, the suit attests, two of the plaintiffs were removed from their room less than 24 hours after one of them allegedly complained to the defendants about their lack of overtime pay. The third plaintiff says she was also terminated and evicted less than 12 hours later after refusing the defendants’ demand that she not contact her former coworkers.
