California
A proposed class and collective action has been filed against Katmai Health Services, LLC and Katmai Government Services, LLC by two former employees who attest that they weren’t properly paid for travel time. According to the complaint, the defendants contract with the U.S. government to provide military training services, including, as in the plaintiffs’ case, roleplaying “missions” during which employees utilize their knowledge of the Arabic language.
According to the suit, the plaintiffs were notified by email of each upcoming mission and were required to confirm their availability. They claim they were asked to report to a designated location in San Clemente, California, where, for security reasons, they waited for each role player to arrive and check in before traveling by bus to the military base. The suit argues that employees were not compensated for the time they spent waiting and traveling, adding that they sometimes drove 60 to 80 miles just to find out the mission had been canceled. As a result, the case alleges, the plaintiffs and other employees are owed approximately one to three hours of unpaid overtime wages for each day they worked.
The case, originally filed in the Superior Court of California, has since been removed to California federal court.
