How Did We Get Here?
The Tubi class action lawsuit, filed in July 2024, claimed that when consumers used the streaming service, hidden tracking software unlawfully captured and shared their personal information without their knowledge or consent.
According to the 15-page complaint, the platform compiled and disclosed data sufficient to identify specific users, along with their exact location, device information and details about any video content they viewed.
The class action suit contended that Tubi’s data-sharing practices plainly violated the VPPA, a federal law that bars “video tape service provider[s]” from sharing a consumer’s personally identifiable information with unrelated third parties without first obtaining prior written authorization.
