How Did We Get Here?
The Suave antiperspirant benzene lawsuit alleged that Unilever failed to warn consumers about the potential presence of the known human carcinogen in some of its Suave 24-Hour Protection aerosols, after an analysis by independent laboratory Valisure showed unacceptable levels of the dangerous chemical in certain product samples.
Per the class action lawsuit, the tested Suave products allegedly contained as much as 5.21 parts per million (ppm) of benzene, well above the 2-ppm limit set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for consumer drug products.
Unilever recalled the Suave 24-Hour Protection aerosol products at issue on March 30, 2022 after an internal review detected “slightly elevated levels” of the cancer-causing substance in certain test samples.
