A class action has been filed against Universal Hair Styling & Barber Shop LLC and its owners by an employee who claims she has worked for years without receiving proper overtime or minimum wages. Filed in New York, the lawsuit asserts that, in addition to failing to pay Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)-mandated wages, Universal Barber Shop also owes the plaintiff spread-of-hours pay and failed to keep accurate records of employees’ hours worked. The plaintiff claims that, throughout her employment, her wages have been paid in cash with commission, with weeks typically totaling more than 77 hours worked. Additionally, the plaintiff says she was required to buy “tools of the trade”—hair dryers, clippers, scissors and various haircare products—with her own money.
