Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed on behalf of individuals who purchased certain TCL QLED televisions that may have been falsely advertised.
Specifically, the attorneys are investigating whether TCL’s 2024-model 6 Series QLED (i.e., quantum dot LED) TVs actually use quantum dot technology, which purports to provide a better and brighter range of colors than standard LED TVs.
According to a September 2024 report, several non-U.S. TCL QLED models were tested and found to contain no traces of indium and cadmium, two elements used in the manufacture of quantum dots. Now, the attorneys are looking into whether the company’s U.S. models—specifically certain 2024 model year QLED 6 Series televisions—were falsely advertised as containing quantum dots, causing buyers to overpay for TVs that may not provide the advertised benefits.
What Are Quantum Crystals and How Are They Used in QLED TVs?
QLED televisions utilize displays containing “quantum dots,” nanocrystals with optical and electronic properties that can be used in a wide range of applications.
In televisions, quantum crystals can be used in combination with LEDs to produce different wavelengths of light, i.e., colors. QLED TVs use a layer of quantum dots through which the LED source is transmitted.
According to TCL, quantum crystals allow a TV to produce a greater range of colors than a standard LED TV—and they are typically more expensive.
How Could a Lawsuit Help?
A lawsuit against TCL could help customers get back some of the money they spent on QLED TVs that may have been falsely advertised. It could also force the company to change how the TVs are made or marketed.
