Privacy Concerns on Health, Shopping and Travel Sites This issue heavily focuses on how data privacy is handled on websites pertaining to several aspects of everyday life – how you shop, travel and handle your health. For online shopping, we have Gap.com and Overstock.com under investigation for potentially sharing customer information with PayPal – even when shoppers aren’t using PayPal to check out. With regard to booking travel plans online, attorneys are looking into several sites including IHG.com and United.com over concerns they may be sharing user data with Facebook. In the world of health, Wellstar is under scrutiny as attorneys investigate whether the health system’s website is sharing sensitive information about patients with Facebook. We’ll round things out with an ongoing proposed class action claiming that Splenda Naturals Stevia products aren’t as natural as advertised, as well as the latest class action settlements that you may be able to claim. Keep reading for the latest. - Ty Armstrong, Writer/Community Manager | Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking to pursue several mass arbitrations against popular shopping websites over how the sites in question handle our private data. While more investigations will likely be added in the future, attorneys are currently looking into Gap.com and Overstock.com. They have reason to believe that both sites may be sharing the online activities of their customers with PayPal in violation of certain privacy laws, even in cases where the purchase is not completed using PayPal. If you shop on either site, check out the details here. | Travel Website Privacy Investigations Continue In a previous issue, we touched on how certain travel websites may be using tracking tools to collect users’ information (including personal data and reservation details) and then sharing that data with Facebook. Now, two more sites have joined the investigation. The new additions include the websites for IHG Hotels and Resorts – a hospitality company that owns 19 brands, including popular chains like Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts, Candlewood Suites and Staybridge Suites – and United Airlines. If you want more information on these new investigations (or the others we’ve previously touched on), we have you covered. | New Data Breach Investigations | | Got a data breach notice? | ~ In Other News ~ Wellstar is one of the largest healthcare systems in Georgia – and attorneys working with ClassAction.org believe that it may be sharing patients’ private information without permission in violation of the law. Specifically, they suspect that Wellstar’s website and online patient portal may be using tracking technology to collect data about users and then sending this information to Facebook for advertising purposes. It’s possible that these tools may reveal highly sensitive information, such as details about medical conditions, treatments and more. So, if you’re a Facebook user who used Wellstar.org or the Wellstar “MyChart” portal within the past two years, find out how you can help the investigation here. | Despite being advertised as “100% Natural,” Splenda Naturals Stevia products are made exclusively of synthetic ingredients, according to a recently filed lawsuit. Specifically, the case claims that the products are made of stevia leaf extract and erythritol – two synthetic ingredients manufactured through a variety of biochemical processes in industrial factories. The lawsuit looks to represent anyone in the United States who, at any time in the past six years, purchased any Splenda Naturals Stevia product bearing the statement “100% Natural.” You can learn more here. | ~ Forward to a friend ~
