Data Privacy and Misleading Product Labels? We’re opening this issue with an investigation into a handful of popular products that may be falsely advertised as free of preservatives – and attorneys want to hear from New York residents specifically. More on which products are under investigation can be found below. From there, we’ll touch on the ever-present matter of online privacy. While some may not be concerned with websites and apps sharing their personal information with Facebook, it may constitute a violation of the law – and you could be owed money because of it. The latest companies under scrutiny are the telemedicine platform GoodRx and the streaming and video rental company Redbox. We’ll round things out with an ongoing lawsuit claiming that Ocean Spray’s Craisins Dried Cranberries and Cranberry Bites contain high amounts of added sugar despite being advertised as a healthy snack. Keep reading for the details. - Ty Armstrong, Writer/Community Manager | From Minute Maid to Great Value, attorneys have reason to believe that certain foods, beverages and personal care items may contain artificial preservatives despite being labeled as preservative-free. Specifically, the attorneys suspect the products may be mislabeled because they contain citric acid, ascorbic acid or disodium EDTA. If this is the case, attorneys may be able to get lawsuits on file to help consumers get back some of the money they spent on their purchases and potentially force the companies to change how their products are advertised. If you live in New York, find the full list of products and details on the investigation here. | GoodRx Users: Could You Be Owed Money for Alleged Privacy Violations? | ~ In Other News ~ Attorneys have reason to believe the movies you’ve rented and/or purchased using Redbox.com or its associated app may be getting disclosed to Facebook along with a unique identifier that matches the data up with your specific Facebook profile. It’s possible that this suspected practice could run afoul of a federal law known as the Video Privacy Protection Act – which was enacted specifically to keep consumers’ video-rental histories private. So, if you have a Facebook account and a Redbox account and used either Redbox.com or the app to stream a movie or reserve one for pickup at a kiosk, you can find the details on our dedicated video privacy page here. | A proposed class action lawsuit is alleging that despite being positioned as “wholesome snacks,” Ocean Spray’s Craisins Dried Cranberries and Cranberry Bites contain high amounts of sugar. According to the case, the Ocean Spray Craisins contain more than 20 grams of added sugar, and the Cranberry Bites contain 16 to 18 grams of added sugar per serving, contributing to about half their calories. Even the “50% Less Sugar” variety of Craisins gets more than 30 percent of its calories from added sugar, six times the amount the FDA considers “healthy” in food, the lawsuit says. You can read up on the details here. | ~ Forward to a friend ~
