West v. Walk Score Management, LLC
Filed: May 31, 2017 ◆§ 1:17-cv-04075
A blind NY woman is the plaintiff in a proposed class action lawsuit filed against Walk Score Management, LLC that claims its website discriminates against the blind.
A blind New York woman is the plaintiff in a proposed class action lawsuit filed against Walk Score Management, LLC that claims the company’s website discriminates against the blind population. Walkscore.com – which allows users to view the “walkability” of apartments and businesses in an area – allegedly contains access barriers that hinder blind people from navigating it freely using their screen readers. From the complaint:
“These barriers are pervasive and include, but are not limited to: lack of alternative text on graphics, inaccessible checkboxes, the lack of adequate prompting and labeling; lack of navigation links; the denial of keyboard access; and the requirement that transactions be performed solely with a mouse.”
The suit claims that these barriers unlawfully prevent the blind from enjoying full and equal access to the website’s services, in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and various state laws.
