Last Updated on May 8, 2018
Sullivan Jr. v. Vox Media, Inc.
Filed: April 11, 2017 ◆§ 1:17-cv-02581
Separate proposed civil rights class actions have been filed claiming videos hosted on Vox.com and HollywoodReporter.com violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.
New York
Separate proposed civil rights class actions have been filed against Vox Media, Inc. and Prometheus Global Media LLC that claim the companies' respective websites—Vox.com and HollywoodReporter.com—unlawfully discriminate against deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. The complaints, which were filed in New York, claim the websites contain accessibility barriers that make it impossible for hard-of-hearing users to comprehend audio portions of videos posted on the web properties. Each lawsuit summarily alleges the lack of closed captioning on some of the defendants’ videos is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Below are links to the videos the plaintiff claims lacked close captioning:
Vox.com – “Watch how a dictionary writer defines English”
HollywoodReporter.com – “Obama White House Workplace Comedy In Development”
Both complaints can be read below.
