New York
A blind individual has filed two separate lawsuits against Friedman’s 31st Street, LLC and The Halal Guys Inc., respectively. The suits claim that the defendants’ websites are inaccessible to the blind population. According to the complaints, the defendants operate restaurants across the country and offer websites to the public that allow them to view store locations and hours, find contact information, and order food online. The plaintiff claims he attempted to access the defendants’ websites using a screen reader, but was met with various access barriers that prevented him from being able to fully navigate the sites and take advantage of their services. The complaints claim the sites lack alternative text that would indicate to the screen reader what images are being displayed. They further argue that some of the websites’ links lack descriptive text or are redundant, resulting in needless repetition. According to the suits, each website is “a service that is heavily integrated with [the restaurants’] physical locations and is a gateway thereto,” meaning it should be equally accessible to disabled individuals.
