The 15-page JPMorgan Chase lawsuit alleges the institution has violated the California Invasion of Privacy Act by embedding into its website a Facebook tracking pixel that can capture all information input by an applicant into the site, including their Social Security number and gross annual income. When a consumer is logged into Facebook and applies for a credit card or home loan on Chase.com, the case explains, the tracking pixel sends to the platform without consent their personally identifiable information and event data that includes financial details and their unique Facebook ID.
“The combination of the event data and the [personally identifiable information] from Facebook’s cookies embedded on chase.com permits Facebook to see sensitive financial information for specific individuals,” the case charges.
The complaint describes an allegedly systematic process whereby JPMorgan Chase has helped Facebook parent Meta Platforms intercept data input into Chase.com by California consumers. The Facebook tracking pixel allows advertisers to track people and the types of actions they take online, with the data being processed and analyzed into datasets for targeted advertising purposes, the case relays.
The California Invasion of Privacy Act expressly prohibits any person or entity from reading, or attempting to read, the contents or meaning of any communication without authorization while the message is in transit, the lawsuit states.
The lawsuit looks to cover all persons in California with a Facebook account who applied for a credit card or home loan on Chase.com.
