Sonic Corp. and 37 subsidiaries across Arizona have been named as defendants in a proposed class action lawsuit filed in the wake of a security breach the company announced in September 2017. The defendants reported that up to five million Sonic customers’ credit and debit card accounts had been compromised, exposing them to possible identity theft. The plaintiff claims she noticed a fraudulent charge on her account totaling $69.29 and spent hours resolving the issue with her bank before the money was refunded to her.
The suit argues that Sonic should have taken “adequate and reasonable measures” to ensure the safety of its customers’ private information, noting the company’s payment system was “more than 30 years old.” Furthermore, the complaint claims the defendants failed to detect the breach “on a timely basis,” and that, as a result, consumers were forced to spend time and money investigating fraudulent charges and monitoring their accounts.
