Sonic Corporation is on the receiving end of a proposed class action lawsuit that alleges it failed to protect customers’ personally identifiable information from being stolen in a data breach.
According to the complaint, Sonic announced on September 26, 2017 that up to five million credit and debit card numbers had been stolen in a security breach, subjecting the plaintiff and proposed class members to an increased risk of identity theft. The suit argues that the defendant neglected to implement adequate security systems that would have prevented the breach and failed to detect and monitor the situation “on a timely basis.”
The plaintiff claims she and other Sonic customers have suffered injuries as a result of the company’s conduct, including fraudulent charges to their accounts, costs associated with protecting and monitoring their data, and the inability to use their credit or debit cards.
