Nguyen v. U-Haul Co. of New York and Vermont, Inc. et al
Filed: June 30, 2017 ◆§ 1:17-cv-03947
A NY woman claims U-Haul fails to live up to its equipment reservation guarantee - and owes consumers money as a result.

Allegedly dishonest advertisements, inattentive management, and outright refusals to honor guarantees made to customers are at the center of a class action filed June 30 against ubiquitous moving company U-Haul. The lawsuit, which formally names U-Haul Co. of New York and Vermont, Inc., U-Haul International, Inc., and Amerco as defendants, takes aim primarily at U-Haul’s reservation guarantee.
U-Haul’s reservation guarantee, which the case says is central to its marketing and advertising, purports that the company will pay a customer $50 should he or she “not receive the equipment size, location and pick up time” agreed upon. The guarantee policy itself, the case says, stems from a previous lawsuit alleging U-Haul fraudulently forced customers to wait hours or days or travel long distances to pick up equipment they were promised would be available upon making a reservation.
According to the complaint, U-Haul has deceived hundreds of thousands of consumers nationwide into renting moving equipment with promises that they would be compensated should it not be available when and where they need it.
“However, [the defendants] consistently fail to pay consumers the $50 when the ordered equipment is unavailable,” the case claims.
