The Numi release card settlement, which received preliminary approval from the court on June 27, 2024, covers those who received a Numi release card after July 21, 2014.
According to the official settlement website, there are more than 1,000 facilities nationwide from which Numi release cards were issued and that are covered by the lawsuit. To determine whether the release card you received is covered by the Numi settlement, head to this page and select the state in which you received the release card. The table on the page will display the eligible facilities for the selected state.

To file a Numi settlement claim form, head to this page. If you received a postcard or email settlement notice, enter the reference number in the box on the page, then enter your name, date of birth, phone number and the eligible states and facilities where you received the release card(s). From there, enter your email address and mailing address, then verify and submit your claim online.
All Numi release card claim forms must be submitted online or by mail by November 19, 2024.
Numi release card settlement class members who file a valid claim can receive a maximum of three times the amount of fees they paid for the release card or $15, whichever is greater. If all class members who submit approved claims are paid in full and there is money left in the $4 million settlement fund, the remaining amount will be distributed to non-profit organizations approved by the court. If the settlement fund is not large enough to pay all approved claims, payments will be divided on a pro-rated basis.
Settlement payments will begin to be distributed to Numi class members after the deal receives final approval from the court. A final settlement approval hearing is scheduled for December 10, 2024.

The plaintiff who filed the initial Numi release card lawsuit was arrested by Portland, Oregon police in November 2014 during a peaceful protest. Per the case, the woman possessed $30 at the time of her arrest and was jailed for eight hours, during which her money was confiscated and held until her release.
When the plaintiff was released, she received in place of her cash a Numi-issued prepaid debit card loaded with the confiscated amount, the suit said. The lawsuit alleged Numi Financial and Central National Bank and Trust Company have made millions from release cards due to the fees charged to arrestees “for the simple act of returning money owed to persons released from custody, including fees charged on a weekly basis” even when the card was never used.
