A New York woman filed suit against Northland Group Inc. back in September over claims that the defendant sent her a debt collection letter that violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). The notice, according to the suit, stated the plaintiff’s “Past due account balance” but failed to indicate whether the amount was accruing interest or other fees. The plaintiff claims the account was, in fact, subject to these extra charges, as evidenced by a previous collection letter that listed a lower balance for the same account. Nevertheless, the suit argues, the defendant failed to adhere to its FDCPA obligation to clearly state the amount of the plaintiff’s alleged debt.
