Mississippi Couple Sues Knauf Gips Over Chemical-Emitting Drywall

Descher v. Knauf Gips KG et al.
Filed: September 11, 2017 ◆§ 1:17-cv-00249-HSO-JCG
German outfit Knauf Gips is the defendant in a lawsuit alleging its Chinese-made drywall emits harmful toxins into the air that can damage HVAC coils and appliances.
Two plaintiffs allege in a proposed class action that German companies Knauf Gips KG and Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co., Ltd. manufactured, marketed and sold to consumers dangerously defective gypsum drywall. According to the suit, the drywall emits levels of “sulfur, methane and/or other volatile organic chemical compounds” that can effectively ruin HVAC coils, refrigerator units, electrical and plumbing components, and other household items. The lawsuit further alleges the defendants’ supposedly defective gypsum drywall can cause allergic reactions, as well as eye and respiratory problems, and sinus and throat infections.
The complaint claims the toxic drywall originates from as many as three plasterboard plants the defendants run in China. As for the drywall itself, the case claims the product was made with “waste material,” called “fly ash,” from coal-fired power plant scrubbers. Fly ash can seep into the air and emit sulfurous compounds that, when combined with moisture in the air, can create sulfuric acid, the case says.
