The 20-page lawsuit says that despite the “active and persistent” representations that Steamfast Home and Away travel steam irons are high-quality, the power cords in the SF-717, SF-720 and SF-727 models suffer from a defect that can cause damage near the cord bushing. This can cause the cord to overheat, posing a risk of fire or burns, the filing states. The defect can also result in exposed copper wires, which can pose a risk of electric shock to users, the suit claims.
The company, which recalled approximately 1.75 million steam irons on December 14 of last year, has apparently received 74 reports of incidents involving the models at issue, including 18 additional reports of the power cord “smoking, sparking, catching fire, or overheating,” the case relays. Per the complaint, two incidents of minor shocks have also been reported.
Vornado failed to disclose to consumers the “defective nature” of the recalled steam irons despite being aware that the products were plagued by a faulty power cord, the filing contends. In fact, roughly 275,000 Steamfast Home and Away travel steam irons were previously recalled by the company in April 2023, the lawsuit shares.
The plaintiff, a South Carolina resident, bought an SF-727 model steam iron in July 2023, the suit says. The woman claims Vornado has never informed her of any recalls or defects associated with the product she purchased and, instead, “learned of the defects on social media.”
As the case tells it, the plaintiff would not have bought the steam iron had she known of the defect that rendered it “worthless and unsafe.”
The lawsuit looks to represent anyone in the United States who purchased any recalled Vornado steam iron between January 2009 and September 2023.
