A blind man filed a proposed class action lawsuit against Fred Meyers Jewelers, Inc. in August over allegations that the jewelry company failed to make its websites equally accessible to the visually impaired population. According to the suit, visitors of www.fredmeyersjewelers.com and www.littmanjewelers.com can access the following goods and services:
- information about store locations and hours;
- an online store where they can learn about and purchase jewelry;
- details of the items for sale (e.g., price, dimensions, what the jewelry is made from, jewelry care);
- gift card purchases;
- shipping information;
- sale and clearance items;
- information about store events;
- a Fred Meyers Jewelers Preferred Card application;
- jewelry design; and
- company policies.
The plaintiff claims he attempted to access the sites and the services they offered but was unable to freely navigate site content because of their incompatibility with his screen-reading software.
