A lawsuit out of Florida claims Speedway LLC unlawfully charged a $125 hold on the accounts of customers who paid at its self-service point-of-sale gas pumps.
A class action lawsuit out of Florida claims Speedway LLC unlawfully charged a $125 hold on the accounts of customers who paid at its self-service point-of-sale gas pumps with credit or debit cards. As a result of Speedway’s alleged actions, the lawsuit says, consumers were denied access to their personal money, which reportedly left many proposed class members unable to pay for basic necessities, with others incurring late fees and charges for having insufficient funds in their accounts.
The named plaintiff said she spent $5 on gas at a Speedway location and later, after her card was declined, noticed her bank account had been entirely wiped out. After she was instructed by her bank to contact Speedway, corporate representatives told her the company implemented a new policy of placing $125 holds on customers’ bank accounts that were supposed to be released within two hours.
Even though Speedway publicly apologized for the $125 hold problem and supposedly did away with the computer program responsible for the glitch, the lawsuit notes the remedy did not take place before proposed class members experienced financial hardship.
