Jefferson Clinton Commons, LLC, which operates New York’s Jefferson Clinton Hotel, is the defendant in a proposed class action lawsuit alleging it broke federal and state civil rights laws by failing to make its website accessible to the blind. The lawsuit was filed by a blind individual who claims she was unable to complete a reservation on the hotel’s website due to various access barriers. The complaint cites several examples of modifications that can be put in place to allow the blind population using screen readers unhindered access to a website. Among them are alternate text, accessible drop down menus, and navigability by keyboard rather than mouse. The suit “seeks to put an end to systemic civil rights violations” allegedly committed by the defendant through its website.
