A Washington consumer filed suit against DirecTV; DirecTV, LLC; and Qwest Corporation (which does business as CenturyLink QC) after discovering his online bills were accessible to the public. The man says he was able to access his March 2017 bill for the defendants’ satellite TV services “through a simple internet search using a common search engine.” The bill contained “personally identifiable information,” according to the complaint, such as the plaintiff’s name, address, phone number, and billing information. Even further, the suit claims the man was also able to access other subscribers’ bills online, and his colleague allegedly viewed the plaintiff’s bill from a different computer, confirming his suspicions.
The plaintiff says he never provided prior consent allowing the defendants to display his personal information online. After the man’s counsel alerted the companies, CenturyLink allegedly acknowledged the issue in a letter attached to the complaint.
