A proposed class action filed against the Law Firm of Ryan E. Calef and Associates claims the legal group has run afoul of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). The New Jersey lawsuit claims the defendants violated the FDCPA when it sent out debt collection letters that did not contain an itemized amount of the debt. The plaintiff says his debt collection letter did not disclose that the amount of debt included an amount for interest. Additionally, the suit alleges the Calef Firm, which acquired the plaintiff’s debt obligation from another entity, did not have a license under New Jersey consumer protection and banking laws allowing it to receive interest.
