JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. has been accused in a proposed class action lawsuit of unlawfully accessing consumers’ credit reports without a valid business reason, thereby invading their privacy and potentially damaging their credit scores. The plaintiff says she took out a mortgage with the defendant and that it was successfully paid off by January 28, 2016. Despite the alleged termination of the defendant’s business relationship with the plaintiff, the bank accessed the plaintiff’s credit report on February 9, 2016, according to the complaint. The plaintiff says she received correspondence from the defendant dated March 21, 2016 in which the defendant noted that it had improperly requested the plaintiff’s report and would have its credit inquiry removed. The suit argues that JPMorgan Chase “blatantly defies” the Fair Credit Reporting Act with its “unreasonable and careless” requests for consumers’ credit reports without a “permissible purpose.”
