Howard Schultz Sued Over Alleged Telemarketing Texts Promoting Book Tour, Presidential Bid

Starbucks founder Howard Schultz is facing a proposed class action that alleges he sent unsolicited telemarketing text messages to promote his national book tour and “explore his potential presidential bid as a centrist.”

The lawsuit claims that Schultz or his agents collected voter records of individuals registered as “no party affiliation” – those who may be receptive to his book and political platform – and sent them automated texts that directed them to his website, where they could view livestreams of his speaking engagements and buy his latest book, From the Ground Up. According to the case, Schultz, in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), failed to obtain recipients’ express written consent before sending the messages and improperly contacted numbers listed on the National Do Not Call registry.
