Hicks v. Houston Baptist University
Filed: December 20, 2017 ◆§ 5:17cv629
A lawsuit cites statements on Houston Baptist University's website as proof the school illegally robocalls consumers without prior express consent.
North Carolina
A proposed class action has been filed in North Carolina against Houston Baptist University over the private school’s alleged practice of placing automatically dialed calls to consumers’ cell phones—even to numbers in the National Do Not Call Registry—without prior express consent to do so. The plaintiff says the university uses a Telephone Consumer Protection Act-prohibited automatic telephone dialing system to solicit consumers to sign up for college classes. Moreover, the complaint points out the defendant, on its own website, advertises that it utilizes autodialing to reach out to potential students:
The plaintiff, who the case says studied at Austin Community College, claims she received calls from the defendant despite her number being listed with the National Do Not Call Registry since August 2006.
