Scott et al v. General Mills, Inc.
Filed: November 1, 2016 ◆§ 0:16-cv-03800-PAM-TNL
General Mills is the defendant in a class action filed over the allegedly deceptive labeling found on its 'Nature Valley' line of granola bars.
General Mills is the defendant in a class action filed over the allegedly deceptive labeling found on its “Nature Valley” line of granola bars. Filed in California, the suit claims that although Nature Valley products – which include crunchy granola bars, trail mix chewy bars and breakfast biscuits – are advertised as containing all-natural ingredients, they actually contain oats that are “tainted by the presence of the unnatural biocide and chemical glyphosate.”
According to the complaint, glyphosate can have detrimental health effects and is categorized as a “probable human carcinogen.” Glyphosate, the lawsuit says, is sprayed onto oat crops during “desiccation,” a process that dries the crops out to produce a faster, more uniform harvest.
“. . . General Mills’ Nature Valley Product labeling and advertising conceals and fails to disclose or warn of the fact that they do or may contain this harmful ingredient, and that scientific studies have linked glyphosate to adverse human health risks,” the complaint summarizes.
