The 34-page Frontier Communications data breach lawsuit accuses the nationwide internet provider of negligently failing to safeguard consumers’ data, which was allegedly kept unencrypted and unredacted in the company’s systems. The suit says current and former Frontier customers’ Social Security numbers were among the data accessed and exfiltrated during the incident.
“Hackers targeted and obtained Plaintiff’s and Class Members’ [personally identifiable information] because of its value in exploiting and stealing the identities of Plaintiff and Class Members,” the case shares. “The present and continuing risk to victims of the Data Breach will remain for their respective lifetimes.”
According to the complaint, Frontier represents to customers that it will keep the information they provide the company safe and confidential and that it will delete any sensitive data once it is no longer required to maintain it. Customers had the reasonable expectation that Frontier would fulfill its cybersecurity obligations to keep their data safe from unauthorized access, the filing says.
The Frontier Communications data breach notice states that the telecom company detected “unauthorized access” to some of its IT systems on April 14, 2024, and encouraged victims to enroll in one year of complimentary identity theft and credit monitoring services.
The suit chides Frontier Communications for exposing consumers’ data and failing to maintain reasonable cybersecurity measures despite the prevalence of data breaches impacting corporations across myriad industries and the value of the information in its care.
The Frontier Communications data breach lawsuit looks to cover all United States residents whose personally identifiable information was compromised in the Frontier Communications data breach, including anyone who received notice about the incident.
