Ford Motor Company faces a proposed class action lawsuit in the wake of its January 2025 recall of nearly 273,000 2021-2023 Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Maverick models equipped with faulty 12-volt batteries made by Camel Group (USA) Battery.

The 27-page Ford lawsuit, which also names Camel Group as a defendant, shares that the Ford Bronco Sport and Maverick batteries at issue have an internal weld and cast-on-strap susceptible to failure, which can cause sudden power loss and vehicle stalling. The filing says the Ford battery recall “leaves more questions than answers” regarding the Bronco Sport and Maverick’s safety and caused the value of affected vehicle models to diminish.
“In all, Defendants’ Recall amounts to tens of thousands of hours and dollars needlessly taken from Plaintiff and other Class Vehicle owners,” the complaint contends.
The plaintiff, a Wisconsin consumer, claims the battery in his Ford Bronco Sport has failed “numerous times” and needed to be replaced after roughly 34,000 miles of driving. The case says that at one point the battery failures “became so prominent” that the plaintiff had to disengage the start/stop feature on his vehicle as it might “stall or stop and not restart while in traffic.”
According to the case, the plaintiff has not been informed of any Ford battery recall and only heard of the battery defects on social media and in news reports. The suit says recall notices are anticipated to be sent in February 2025.
“The result of Defendants’ recall, which includes a free fix and repair clause, will cost Plaintiff hours of his time,” the suit says, claiming that even if the recall measures are effective, the plaintiff is nevertheless burdened with a “devalued” vehicle with a “known history of faulty design.”
Further, the proposed class action suit argues that there exists the risk the 12-volt batteries in Ford Bronco Sport and Maverick models will fail again unless Ford issues a “more comprehensive recall” to address the root cause of the defect.
The Ford battery recall lawsuit looks to cover anyone in the United States who bought a 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport or 2022-2023 Ford Maverick equipped with a 12-volt battery that has an internal weld and cast-on-strap manufactured by Camel Battery Group.
