Filed: May 19, 2017 ◆§ 2:17-cv-03603-KM-JBC
A New Jersey woman has filed a proposed class action lawsuit against Federated Law Group, PLLC, claiming the debt collector attempted to collect illegal interest or fees.
A New Jersey woman has filed a proposed class action lawsuit against Federated Law Group, PLLC, claiming the debt collector attempted to collect illegal interest or fees in a collection letter. According to the lawsuit, the defendant’s letter demanded an amount that was $647.13 higher than the amount specified by the plaintiff’s original creditor. The plaintiff argues that the additional amount was added illegally because the defendant is not permitted to collect interest on her account. Furthermore, the company for whom the defendant was attempting to collect a debt was allegedly not licensed as a consumer lender in New Jersey, and therefore, could not charge extra fees. As a result, Federated Law Group’s letter violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the suit claims.
