According to the 23-page lawsuit, Reneotech’s EcoRaider and EcoVenger Bed Bug Killer, Mosquito-Go and Ant & Crawling Insect Killer are each prominently labeled as “natural” to appeal to health-conscious consumers, even though the insecticides contain synthetic ingredients such as geraniol, sodium lauryl sulfate, glycerol monooleate and silica hydrate.
Although the synthetic components appear in the ingredients list on the products’ back labels, the suit argues that a reasonable consumer would interpret the “natural” representations to mean that the products contain only natural substances.
“Discovering that the ingredients are not natural and are actually synthetic requires a scientific investigation and knowledge of chemistry beyond that of the average consumer,” the case contends.
As the complaint tells it, the alleged misrepresentations are intended to capitalize on growing consumer demand for natural products free of artificial ingredients. Shoppers are willing to pay more for everyday items that are marketed as natural because they believe the products are safer and healthier than those made with synthetic substances, the filing relays.
Per the lawsuit, a substance is considered natural if it is produced or extracted from a naturally occurring source and has not undergone a chemical change beyond one created by a biological process.
Because of the misleading representations, the defendant is able to charge a premium price for its EcoRaider and EcoVenger products, the suit claims.
The plaintiff, a New York resident, ordered the defendant’s Bed Bug Killer from Amazon.com in June 2022 for the price of $21.72, the case says. The man believed, based on representations of the product, that it contained only natural ingredients, and had he known that it actually contained numerous synthetic components, he would not have paid as much or purchased it at all, the complaint charges.
The lawsuit looks to represent anyone in the United States who purchased any of the EcoRaider or EcoVenger products listed on this page during the applicable statute of limitations period.
