Consumers have filed a class action against Hyundai claiming its new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions contain a defective control module.
Consumers have filed a class action against Hyundai claiming its new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions contain a defective control module that can allegedly cause shifting problems, stalling, delayed acceleration and loss of power. The lawsuit notes that the company’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission—found in certain Hyundai Veloster, Sonata (Eco) and Elantra (Eco) models—is designed to improve fuel economy, lower CO2 emissions and increase acceleration power in comparison to standard six-speed automatic transmissions.
The plaintiffs claim the faulty transmission control modules (TCMs)—small components within the powertrain that process data via sensors throughout the engine—are defective because they fail to properly interpret data and thus miscalculate appropriate gears and shifting times. Despite releasing service bulletins to address owners’ complaints about the problem, Hyundai is reportedly still unable to resolve the issue.
The driving conditions caused by the alleged defect “are hazardous because they severely affect the driver’s ability to control the vehicle during normal driving conditions and prevents drivers from accelerating to maintain sage speeds in traffic,” the suit says.
