According to the 50-page amended complaint, a criminal threat actor gained access to HALO’s computer systems and obtained files containing private information in November 2023. Per the data breach lawsuit, the cyberattack exposed the names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers of employees of the Illinois-based advertising services company.
Despite HALO’s duty to safeguard the sensitive data in its care, the company failed to implement adequate cybersecurity protocols to prevent unauthorized intrusion into its network, the suit claims.
The case alleges that as a result of the company’s negligence, employees’ private information is now “in the hands of criminals” who can use it to target them for cyber-crimes such as identity theft and fraud.
In addition, the complaint argues that the data breach notice letter HALO issued to victims lacked crucial details about the incident. As the filing tells it, the notice failed to explain how cybercriminals gained access to the company’s computer systems and what steps are being taken to better secure stored information in the future.
The plaintiff, a former HALO employee residing in California, says he received notice from the company in late March 2024 informing him that his personal data had been compromised in the breach. The man claims that the unauthorized disclosure of his information has caused him anxiety and stress, “which has been compounded by the fact that [HALO] has still not fully informed his [sic] of key details about the data breach’s occurrence.”
The lawsuit looks to represent anyone HALO has identified as being among the individuals impacted by the data breach in or around November 2023, including those who were sent notice of the incident.
