According to Prudential’s data breach notice letter, the insurer discovered on February 5 of this year that an unauthorized third party had accessed some of the company’s computer systems the day before, on February 4, and exfiltrated “a small percentage of personal information” stored therein.
The 28-page data breach lawsuit says the cyberattack compromised individuals’ names, addresses, dates of birth, emails, phone numbers and Prudential ID numbers.
The suit claims that the cyberattack and resultant disclosure of confidential information stemmed from Prudential’s negligent data security protocols. As the case tells it, the incident could have been prevented completely had the defendant adequately encrypted its servers and the information they housed.
In addition, the filing shares that although Prudential purports to have detected the data breach in early February 2024, it did not begin to notify victims until late last month.
The plaintiff, a Prudential client residing in Minnesota, says she received notice from the insurance company in late May of this year informing her that her confidential data had been exposed in the breach.
The woman claims that, as a result of the incident, she has suffered “increased anxiety” over the loss of her privacy and the potential consequences of cybercriminals accessing, using and selling her personal information.
The lawsuit looks to represent anyone in the United States whose personal and/or financial information was exposed to unauthorized third parties as a result of the data breach Prudential experienced on February 4, 2024.
