The 14-page lawsuit was filed by a woman who says that in February 2023, she was contacted by the Florida-based company about its home security and alarm systems services. Though the plaintiff “explicitly expressed disinterest” and asked not to be contacted again, she was alerted the next day by her credit monitoring service that an account associated with Core Home Security had been opened in her name, the suit relays.
According to the case, a review of the woman’s credit reports showed that the company had submitted a credit inquiry to two credit reporting agencies without her authorization.
Because the plaintiff had denied Core Home Security’s services, the company “had no legitimate business need for the information,” the complaint contends.
As such, the defendant’s conduct violates the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a federal law that prohibits companies from obtaining a consumer report without a permissible purpose, the filing alleges.
The lawsuit looks to represent anyone in the United States whose consumer credit report was acquired by Core Home Security for an account review inquiry without permission at any time within the past two years.
