Consumer Says Nature’s Bounty Representations of Biotin Health Benefits ‘Likely to Deceive the Public’

Mazzo v. Nature's Bounty Co. et al
Filed: February 27, 2018 ◆§ 1:18cv1255
A consumer alleges Nature's Bounty's claim that its biotin products support healthy hair, skin, and nails' is false and deceptive.
Biotin supplements manufactured and sold by Nature’s Bounty are under the microscope in a proposed class action lawsuit in which a woman alleges the products do not provide support for “healthy hair, skin, and nails” as advertised. The lawsuit claims The Nature’s Bounty Co. and Nature’s Bounty, Inc.’s supplements, while helpful to those with “exceedingly rare” biotin deficiencies, provide little to no benefit to otherwise healthy people who, the case says, “already have more than adequate, if not excessive, amounts of biotin derived from their diet naturally.”
The biotin levels provided by the defendant’s supplements are effectively superfluous because once the human body hits its ceiling for biotin, any excess amount goes unused, the case asserts. The suit adds that the average adult intakes about 35-70 mcg of biotin per day, yet the products at issue in the suit are said to deliver up 300 times this amount. Taking such a mega-dose of biotin is “a waste of money and wholly pointless,” according to the suit, and may even lead to cystic acne on the chin and jaw or allergic reactions.
