According to the plaintiff, Revenue Group attempted to collect a $4.95 'convenience' fee without proper authorization to do so.
An Ohio consumer claims in a proposed class action that defendant Revenue Group mailed her a collection notice in which it attempted to collect an unauthorized $4.95 convenience fee for a medical services debt. According to the suit, the collection notice, which was sent by the defendant in early April 2017, violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDPCA) because it “misled and deceived” the plaintiff into believing she owed an additional $4.95.
“[The plaintiff] did not agree to such a collection charge,” the complaint states. “The addition of this collection fee by [the defendant] which was not authorized by the agreement creating the debt or permitted by law, was an attempt to collect an amount not owed by [the plaintiff].”
