The lawsuit against Conagra was initially filed in March 2023 and took issue with allegedly misleading sustainability claims found on the labels of Mrs. Paul’s Crispy Battered Fillets, Crunchy Breaded Fillets, Fish Sticks, Fish Fingers, and Beer Battered Fillets, as well as Van De Kamp’s Crispy Battered Fillets, Crunchy Breaded Fillets, Fish Sticks, and Beer Battered Fillets.

Contrary to representations that the products are “certified sustainable seafood” and “good for the environment,” Conagra sources its fillets and fish sticks using fishing methods that harm ocean habitats and marine life, the case claimed. Per the complaint, the defendant’s products are sourced in the Bering Sea by Russian fisheries that use large nets that cause overfishing, indiscriminately capture non-target species and lead to the suffocation and crushing of sea lions, sharks and whales.
