A Georgia consumer’s proposed class action filed this week alleges Collection Services of Athens, Inc. illegally attempted to tack on a $1.00 “convenience fee” to her debt which the company “has no legal or contractual right” to collect. According to the lawsuit, the defendant violated the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) by trying to collect a fee not expressly authorized by the agreement between the debtor and original creditor that created the debt.
