Roadrunner Transportation Systems, Inc. has been hit with a proposed class action filed over an April 2018 data breach during which employees’ personally identifying information was allegedly compromised. The case claims the defendant failed to put in place proper security procedures to prevent or quickly detect the breach and neglected to timely notify those affected.
The suit explains that hackers gained access to the company’s human resources platform through a phishing campaign and were able to collect sensitive employee information, such as names, addresses, birthdates, Social Security numbers, financial information, and insurance information. Adding to the damage, the case adds, was that certain employees’ direct deposit accounts were changed during the breach.
The defendant first discovered the attack in late-May 2018, the case says, yet waited until July 13 to notify affected individuals. The plaintiff, a former employee of the freight and logistics company, says he discovered a fraudulent tax return under his name within weeks of being notified that his personal information had been compromised. He and other affected employees, the case charges, will now be forced to spend “a significant amount of time” monitoring their accounts and credit reports in order to protect themselves from fraudulent activity. Although Roadrunner allegedly offered employees 12 months of free identity monitoring services, the lawsuit argues that proposed class members will likely be at a heightened risk of identity theft “for the rest of their lives.”
