The 21-page lawsuit seeks to hold the aerospace parts manufacturer accountable for the dayslong blaze, which the case says resulted in a shelter-in-place order, evacuations, school closures and business disruptions for “hundreds if not thousands” of individuals within the surrounding area. Proposed class members are entitled to compensation for loss of income and profits, property damage and emotional distress caused by the fire, the case alleges.
According to NBC Philadelphia, the massive fire was officially brought under control on February 22. The containment effort required “around the clock work” from 68 fire departments, the case says.
Although the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, the complaint claims the 560,000-square-foot facility was negligently operated. Per the suit, the incident was a result of SPS Technologies’ “tortious failures” to properly inspect, maintain and run its manufacturing and production equipment and materials on par with industry standards.
On February 18, Abington Township advised residents and businesses near the SPS Technologies site to voluntarily evacuate and those within a one-mile radius to shelter in place due to “changing conditions and concerns of air quality.” Per the suit, the fire caused thick plumes of smoke and hazardous particulates to emanate across the community.
The plaintiff, a school bus driver for Abington School District, says she lost approximately $200 in wages when the fire forced schools to close on February 18 and 19. The woman also says the explosion shook her home, located roughly 1.6 miles from SPS Technologies’ facility, and that the fire brought in thick fumes with a noxious odor.
“In addition, the fire has caused [the plaintiff] significant emotional distress, including as concerns future adverse health effects as a result of release of harmful chemical particulates from the fire,” the SPS Technologies fire lawsuit shares.
The case looks to represent all Pennsylvania citizens who were impacted, injured or damaged by SPS Technologies’ fire and explosion on February 17, 2025, including those who lived or operated a business proximate to the defendant’s facility.
