Class Action: Home Depot Pushes Fake ‘Swamp’ Mahogany on Customers [UPDATE]
Last Updated on May 8, 2018
Golden v. Home Depot U.S.A., Inc.
Filed: August 30, 2017 ◆§ 2:17-at-00907
A case out of California alleges Home Depot intentionally pushes wood products represented as mahogany that are actually different species of wood altogether.
[Update - This case was voluntarily dismissed on January 3, 2018. Two days later, the plaintiff refiled with a new complaint, docket number 1:18-cv-00033-LJO-JLT, in District Court for the Eastern District of California. The new complaint can be read here.]
A 39-page proposed class action out of California claims Home Depot unlawfully induced consumers into purchasing wood products represented to be authentic mahogany that, in truth, were another species of wood altogether. The complaint alleges Home Depot intentionally deceived customers about the quality of certain wood products, which the case explains do not “hold the substantial prestige, value, beauty, workability, or quality of authentic mahogany.” According to the lawsuit, consumers seeking to buy true mahogany from Home Depot instead receive eucalyptus, a denser, more difficult-to-work-with wood commonly called swamp mahogany.
