Ross v. Uber Technologies Inc
Filed: January 23, 2018 ◆§ 7:18cv117
A proposed class action has been filed against Uber Technologies, Inc. over a security breach that reportedly compromised the private information of millions of the ride-sharing service’s drivers and customers.
A proposed class action has been filed against Uber Technologies, Inc. over a security breach that reportedly compromised the private information of millions of the ride-sharing service’s drivers and customers. According to the complaint, the defendant reported in November 2017 that it had suffered “a massive data breach” in October 2016, over a year earlier, during which hackers had accessed the personal identifying information of thousands of consumers.
The plaintiff alleges that the defendant should have alerted its drivers and riders when it learned of the breach in November 2016, but chose to hide the information and went so far as to pay the hackers to cover up the story.
Even further, the suit claims that around the time of the breach, the defendant had settled a lawsuit with the Attorney General of New York over attempting to hide another data breach it had suffered in 2014. The case argues the company again “made the illegal and reprehensible decision” to keep victims in the dark on top of failing to adequately protect their information.
The plaintiff says she and proposed class members, as a result of the defendant’s actions, are at risk of identity theft and must now invest time and money monitoring their accounts and investigating any fraudulent activity.
