Coast Professional, Inc. is facing a proposed class action that claims the defendant sent the plaintiff a debt collection letter that didn’t clearly state how much she purportedly owed. According to the complaint, the notice, which concerned a debt supposedly owed to “Middle TN State University / Tuition,” presented an itemized list of charges, including “$0.00” of “interest.” Further down in the letter, the case continues, the defendant warned the plaintiff that her balance may increase due to “interest or other fees that may vary from day to day.” The suit argues that this information is confusing because “it is evident from the top portion of the letter that interest or fees are not being added to [the plaintiff’s] alleged debt balance.” Upon reading the letter, the case alleges, the plaintiff would be unsure as to whether the balance listed in the letter was her actual amount of debt or if it was a greater amount due to accruing interest.
