Walker v. Roosevelt Hotel Realty LLC
Filed: March 27, 2017 ◆§ 1:17-cv-01677
Roosevelt Hotel Realty LLC has been hit with a civil rights lawsuit claiming the hotel chain's website is inaccessible to the blind.
Roosevelt Hotel Realty LLC, which operates more than 10 hotels in New York, has been hit with a civil rights lawsuit claiming the hotel chain’s website Theroosevelthotel.com is inaccessible to the blind. The plaintiff, a blind man living in New York, argues that the defendant fails to implement available technology that would allow visually impaired people to use its website as freely as sighted customers. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 states:
“No individual shall be discriminated against on the basis of disability in the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of any place of public accommodation by any person who owns, leases (or leases to), or operates a place of public accommodation.”
The complaint also alleges violations of various New York State civil and human rights laws and claims that Theroosevelthotel.com is required to utilize technology such as alternative text, accessible forms, descriptive links, and resizable text to make their website equally accessible to blind and sighted people.
